Board of Education says NHCS superintendent will be announced in August

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Board of Education will soon interview candidates for the next superintendent of the public school system.

The BOE says interviews will take place at the end of June.Interviewees have been selected from an initial pool of 41 applicants from 18 states.

“The Board is excited to be on track to announce the new superintendent in early August,” Board Chair Lisa Estep said. “Our goal throughout this process has been to have the new superintendent in place to ensure a smooth transition from summer into the 2020-21 school year.”

The North Carolina School Boards Association is facilitating the hiring process, which has included input from over 500 community surveys, over 800 staff surveys, and statements from community groups and organizations.

Dr. Del Burns has been the interim superintendent since taking over the reins in March from Tim Markley, who resigned in the midst of the controversy surrounding the district’s dealing with sexual misconduct claims.
