Bond referendum on beach improvements for Bald Head Island to be on ballot in March

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Eligible voters in the Village of Bald Head Island will be seeing a new item on their ballot during the primary election in March.

A bond referendum — ranging between $11.2 million and $20.2 million — to fund beach improvements will be on the ballot.

The money would cover the costs of replacing a groin field, which are built perpendicular to the water to prevent sediment from moving down the shoreline.

The money would also fund transporting and adding more sand dunes to control erosion and provide hurricane protection.

“Maintaining the shoreline and having an engineered beach is what works to protect our public infrastructure like our water, sewer and roads,” said Carin Faulkner, Bald Head Island Public Information Officer.  “It also preserves the habitat for bird and turtle nesting.”

If the bond is approved, the beach work would take place between November 2024 and April 2025.
