Breast cancer survivor urges early screening after life-saving mammogram

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY-TV) — One in eight women will develop breast cancer, according to Novant Health. Amy Horney was diagnosed with stage one hormonal breast cancer after her routine annual mammogram in August.

Her cancer was detected early and she underwent treatment to remove her cancerous tumor.

Women are recommended to take a mammogram test at age 40 but Horney is urging women to take the evaluation earlier rather than later.

“Women who are younger than 40, I feel they may be getting a later diagnosis because they’re not monitoring them and I feel like you should be getting a mammogram you’re whole entire life,” Horney said.

Horney will be undergoing radiation treatment at the end of the month. Click here for more information about scheduling a mammogram.
