Bridge Church congregation paints over hateful graffiti

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Earlier this week several locations throughout Wilmington were vandalized with hate speech.

Police say this includes the Bridge Church on Market Street. The church is known for being inclusive and diverse.

Sunday afternoon, the church’s congregation and members from other religious organizations gathered to paint over the hateful statements and drawings.

Pastor Ethan Welch says that ironically, this was a blessing in disguise. “This only actually helps our cause, as evil as it is, and as tragic as it is, this is rallying our church together and it’s obviously rallying our community together. So at the end of the day it’s a good thing for us,” Welch explained.

Welch says that there is no room for hate in our town, and certainly not in his church.
