Brunswick Co. Sheriff’s Office K9 dies

BOLIVIA, NC (WWAY) — The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of one of its K9 deputies. Moncey, a female German Shepard, died suddenly Sunday.

Spokeswoman Emily Flax said K9 Moncey died after a tumor ruptured in her spleen. She said Moncey was recently the K9 partner of Deputy Damien Gunnell, and she lived with the deputy at his home. Dep. Gunnell found his partner unresponsive. Flax said Moncey was about 5 years old.

Flax said the process to get a new K9 can be a lengthy one, depending on availability. There’s been no discussion of a plan for that at this time, she said.
