Brunswick County Superintendent addresses concerns over new security camera technology

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The Brunswick County Superintendent is addressing concerns over their new security cameras following several community questions at a recent meeting.

The pilot phase began at the Center of Applied Sciences and Technology (COAST) in November of 2023, with students and staff made aware of the change.

School administrators will monitor the new camera system technology with the support of the School Resource Officer, front office employees, and the BCS Technology Department.

The footage is locally stored in the schools and can only be accessed by staff with authorized access, the superintendent says.

“Our current system has been in place for almost fifteen years, and the majority of our security cameras are over a decade old,” a statement read. “Over that time, technology has improved tremendously. Brunswick County Schools can proactively utilize this smart camera technology to secure our campuses and keep our students and staff safe.”

They say there will be no use of facial recognition software in Brunswick County Schools. The purpose of the new camera system technology is to maintain a safe academic environment for students and staff, according to the school board.

Enhancements will include increased zoom capabilities and storage capacity, perimeter defense, object analytics, motion detection, and the capability to directly alert school administration of a security breach.
