Brunswick County looking for bus drivers

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The Brunswick County School System is looking to hire a number of school bus drivers and they even have a training session coming up for interested applicants next month.

According to transportation director Bobby Taylor, there are positions with time commitments ranging from three hours a day to full time with benefits.

Taylor said there are nine spots open right now and he expects a few more to open as the school year ends and summer begins.

“It is not typical. And actually as a state and the nation we’re dealing with a shortage of bus drivers,” Taylor said.

He said that shortage might be due to the challenge of becoming a bus driver. Taylor said you have to go through a three day class, complete on-the-road training, and pass a number of background checks and criteria. For example in North Carolina a bus driver cannot have more that two DWI’s.

Taylor says they’re looking to fill positions throughout the county but if he were to pinpoint an area the southern part near Southport or Boiling Spring Lakes is where they need drivers the most
