BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Brunswick County man is facing a felony charge after allegedly threatening to kill State Senator Bill Rabon and dozens of other North Carolina lawmakers.

According to arrest warrants, Anthony Street is charged with threatening an executive, legislative, or court officer. The warrant states that on June 18, Street posted a threat on Facebook targeting Senator Rabon, who represents Brunswick County, as well as 40 other state senators. In the post, Street allegedly wrote, “you deserve to lose your lives,” and warned that “what happened to Melissa Hortman and John Hoffman in Minnesota can happen here in North Carolina.”  Former Democratic House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were shot and killed in their home on June 14.

Street was arrested on Friday and made his first court appearance Monday. He was given a $2,000 bond and assigned a public defender. According to court documents, Street told officials he has been unemployed since oyster season ended.

On Monday, Street made his first court appearance in Brunswick County. The presiding judge modified his bond, increasing it to a secured amount of $25,000. As a result, Street was immediately taken back into custody and returned to the Brunswick County Jail.

Reportedly, Street was upset over an amendment Sen. Rabon added to House Bill 442.  The original bill, which passed in the House, was filed to restore recreational fishing for flounder and red snapper. The amendment would ban fishermen from netting shrimp within inland waters or within half a mile of the shoreline.

The amended bill, if passed by the House, will proceed to Governor Josh Stein’s desk for consideration.

On Monday, the Senate passed a bill to establish a Shrimp Trawl Transition Payment Program, offering financial support to commercial shrimper impacted by HB 442.
