Brunswick County School leaders lay out capital needs
BOLIVIA, NC (WWAY) — The Brunswick County Board of Education unanimously approved a bond resolution Tuesday night, hoping to get schools ready for a growing population.
Originally the estimated bond was for $173 million. But Jessica Swencki, a school spokeswoman, says board members removed that number in case estimates come in lower than expected. She says school and county officials are working together to find out what the actual amount of the bonds will be. The amount will be based on projects that need the most attention.
Swencki says the resolution is an important first step in the bond process. School board members will now ask Brunswick County Commissioners to add the bond to the 2016 ballot.
School leaders have put together a video outlying some of their needs. Building a new middle school at Town Creek, improving athletic facilities and replacing the K-2 building at Waccamaw Elementary School tops the list.
