Brunswick County Schools warns families about phishing scam targeting students

BOLIVIA, NC (WWAY) — Brunswick County Schools is alerting families after a phishing scam was recently sent to student email accounts, officials said.
The fraudulent email used the subject line, “Brunswick County Schools Opportunities Designed for Students,” and falsely claimed to offer students flexible summer work paying $300 per week. District officials confirmed the message did not come from Brunswick County Schools or its Human Resources Department.
The email included an “Apply Now” link that directed users to a Google Form titled “Flexible Work-from-Home Opportunities for Students.” The district is urging students and families not to open the link or complete the form.
Once the phishing attempt was identified, Brunswick County Schools removed the email from all student accounts. However, officials say any student who opened the form and submitted personal information—including name, address, phone number, email, age, or financial details—should consider that information potentially compromised.
Families are encouraged to contact their financial institutions immediately if sensitive information was shared and to closely monitor accounts for suspicious activity.
Students are also being reminded to report suspicious emails using the “Report phishing” button in Gmail.
District officials warn that online scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated and emphasize the importance of caution when opening emails—especially those promising money, jobs, prizes, or other financial incentives.
