BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a fake pharmacy phone call scam.

The BCSO says they’ve received reports of phone calls from people claiming to represent Walgreens or other pharmacies. The callers say they are “updating flu shot records” or confirming prescriptions and then ask for personal information.

Callers are asking for date of birth, address or Social Security number, insurance or Medicare details, prescription or medical account numbers.

The sheriff’s office says these calls could be fraudulent and scammers use this information to steal identities or commit fraud.

Deputies remind people that Walgreens and other pharmacies will never ask for personal or financial information over an unsolicited phone call. Also, if you are unsure if the call is real or not hang up and call your local pharmacy using the number printed on your prescription label.

It is not recommended to share personal information unless you initiated the call and you are certain of who you are speaking with.

Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office is asking those who receive the calls to report them by calling 910-253-2777.
