Brunswick County to get two new college baseball teams this summer

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. (WWAY) – Introducing the Shallotte Shallywags and the Oak Island Loggerheads of The Old North State League.
The Brunswick County communities will each receive a summer college baseball team that will begin play in 2025.
Shallotte will play their games at West Brunswick High School. Keeping their roster local, the Shallywags will have more than a half dozen Brunswick Community College players on their roster.
Assistant General Manager Steve Prokop says he is proud to bring baseball to his hometown, adding the team has promotions planned for their inaugural season. Prokop says they will be “Savannah Bananas Lite.”
“To be able to sit here and help grow the game in this area that is very baseball savvy to begin with, but now it’s really an opportunity to be able to give the opportunity to college kids to come and play for the summer,” Prokop said. “Supply a fun, family friendly entertainment for the local community. I’m really excited for the upcoming season.”
The Loggerheads meanwhile will play at a heavily renovated field at Bill Smith Park in Southport, which is currently being worked on.
Oak Island’s first ever roster includes a pair of UNCW players, which Director of Baseball Operations Greyson Gursky says is a nice thing for the team and community.
“It’s great, honestly,” Gursky said. “I think that’s a big emphasis. Just involving people around you, too. I would like a pipeline to UNCW and the schools around. We have players that graduated from South Brunswick down the street and we have a player that’s getting ready to graduate from North Brunswick on our team as well. I thought it would be nice and be good and important to involve those guys on our team. Kind of build a sense of community with that as well.”
The Shallywags will open their inaugural season on June 4 at home before visiting the Loggerheads the next day for Oak Island’s first ever game.
