SUPPLY, NC (WWAY) — The Brunswick Town Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution will dedicate a historic marker later this month honoring the men and women who supported the fight for American independence.

The dedication ceremony is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 27, on the lawn of the Brunswick County Courthouse.

The bronze marker, designed and provided through the NSDAR marker program, recognizes individuals who contributed to the American Revolution between the Battle of Lexington on April 19, 1775, and the British departure from New York on Nov. 26, 1783. Many Brunswick County residents of that era played roles in the war effort in a variety of capacities.

Members of the Brunswick Town Chapter applied for the marker two years ago and raised funds through donations and community support to purchase it.

The marker will be installed on the east side of the courthouse lawn near the parking entrance, where a garden will also be planted. Brunswick County workers will maintain the marker and surrounding garden.

A color guard from American Legion Post 453 will open the ceremony, which is expected to include state and county officials, members of the DAR and Sons of the American Revolution, and the public.

The Brunswick Town Chapter has previously installed several historic markers throughout the county, including a bronze marker recognizing the July 18–19, 1775 seizure and burning of Fort Johnson by local citizens, a marker honoring Korean War soldiers, a memorial listing Brunswick County’s Vietnam War dead, and a new gravestone for Revolutionary War patriot Sempromius Russ.

The Daughters of the American Revolution is a nonprofit, nonpolitical service organization founded in 1890 for women who can prove direct lineage to a patriot who supported the American Revolution. The organization promotes patriotism, education and historic preservation.

The organization has more than 185,000 members worldwide in about 3,000 chapters.  The Brunswick Town Chapter has more than 170 members, several of whom descend from patriots who lived in Brunswick County during the Revolutionary War. Chapter members trace their lineage to more than 700 verified patriots from the original 13 colonies.
