OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — Around 3:46pm Friday afternoon Oak Island Fire Department received a notification of a possible fire on E.F. Middleton Blvd. When the engine arrived on scene they found a fire at Williamson Tract, a wooded area.

At 4:30pm all traffic was closed on the boulevard then later modified to allow travel in the Northbound lanes.

By 8:00pm the fire was prevented from spreading and contained. E.F. Middleton Blvd was once again reopened but closed between 3:30am through 9:00am as the visibility was limited from lingering smoke.

8-12 acres of woodland was burned. Conditions will continued to be monitored but there is no threat to the public. Intermittent road closures are still possible due to the smoke.

Once the fire is fully extinguished the cause will be investigated but no foul play has been suspected. No injuries have been reported.
