Candidate says campaign signs were vandalized with gay slurs
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Multiple campaign signs spray painted and plastered with gay slurs. The vandals targeted New Hanover County Commission Candidate (D) Julia Boseman.
She found these signs defaced in front of her office and at several locations around town. She says she even saw signs near her family’s home that were defaced.
The signs were spray painted over and gay slurs as well as “No LGBT”.
Hundreds have commented on her Facebook post about the signs showing support for her.
Boseman previously served on the county commission as well as in the state senate.
“It’s unfortunate that we have to get to name calling,” Boseman said. “I’m grateful for the support. I’m not grateful that my brothers and my mom had to see it. I’m not grateful that I’m going to have a conversation with my 14 year old when we get home about what it is that we saw on the signs today. We need to know tolerance. Bullying is not okay and I’m not going to be bullied. They can call me what they want to but on November the 6 they’re going to call me their next county commissioner.”
Fellow democrat Commissioner Rob Zapple says there is no room in the community for these actions and he knows it will only motivate Boseman.
Republican candidate Skip Watkins calls the actions “just plain wrong” and he hopes the vandals are caught.
Boseman says she did not file a police report.
