Burgaw holds ribbon cutting for new town center

BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — Just days before the start of the North Carolina Blueberry Festival, the Town of Burgaw held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new town center, bringing new life to the more than 50-year-old building.

The town center has been open for the past year.

It used to be the former Pender County Rescue Squad, built in the early 1970’s.

The Rescue Squad used the building up until 2003.

Jimmy Basden was a charting member of the squad and said its great seeing the building continue to be used.

“To make it grow and be better is just great,” Basden said. “It’s just, community going forward good and great, better.”

The town center will be used to hold meetings and other events.

Mayor Olivia Dawson said the center will help Burgaw as it continues to grow in the coming years.

“This building to me, is a symbol of us moving forward,” Dawson said. “Making those necessary improvements to making just our small town even better and more prosperous. It’s a great new start to our town and what we are able to offer to our residents. And a nice meeting space where everyone has the opportunity to hear as well as see our town meetings.”

Construction of the town center took around 3 years to complete.
