Camp Lejeune Marine’s remains returned home to CA
ONSLOW COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Camp Lejeune Marine who was killed fighting ISIS in Iraq has made his last and final trip back home.
The remains of Staff Sergeant Louis Cardin arrived in Riverside County, California, Saturday afternoon, according to CNN. He was among several hundred marines deployed as part of Operation Inherent Resolve. Officials said Cardin was mortally wounded during an ISIS attack on his base last Saturday.
He had served three tours of duty in Afghanistan before his deployment to Iraq.
A public service for Cardin is set for Friday ahead of his funeral at Riverside National Cemetery.
Flags were flown at half-staff across California in his honor this week. Cardin was assigned to the 2nd battalion, 6th marine regiment, 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit at Camp Lejeune.
