JACKSONVILLE, NC (WWAY) — Beginning Monday, Sept. 1, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River will require REAL ID-compliant identification as the primary credential for unaffiliated personnel seeking access to those military bases.

The change applies to contractors, vendors, suppliers, service providers, and visitors, all of whom must continue to be vetted through the Visitor Control Center prior to entry.

“This shift allows us to simplify our access control process while continuing to maintain a secure environment for our Marines, sailors and their families,” said Brig. Gen. Ralph J. Rizzo, Jr., commanding general of Marine Corps Installations East – Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. “REAL ID provides a consistent and reliable credential that aligns with Department of Defense policies and nationwide standards.”

What it means for visitors

A REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or state-issued identification card will serve as the preferred credential for entry. Those without REAL ID may still use alternate valid forms of identification, but will be issued a Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS) card or paper pass after being vetted at the Visitor Control Center.

Individuals who already have a DBIDS card may continue to use it until it expires. The Department of Defense has authorized federal installations to utilize REAL ID in place of DBIDS cards, a move officials say will reduce reliance on card-printing systems and lower maintenance costs.

DBIDS credentials will remain available in cases where alternate valid IDs are presented or for special circumstances that require them.

Base officials encourage anyone without REAL ID to review the list of acceptable alternate IDs before visiting, and to bring proper documentation to avoid delays at the gate.
