Cape Fear Community College breaks ground on Surf City campus expansion

HAMPSTEAD, NC (WWAY) — Cape Fear Community College is expanding in Pender County, breaking ground on a new building at its Surf City campus.

The more than 10,000 square foot addition will double the size of the existing facility.

It will include two workforce development labs, a biology lab, dedicated veterans center, and additional office space.

Monday’s ceremony also marked the 10-year anniversary of the Alston W. Burke Center—which first opened in 2015.

CFCC President Jim Morton says the $4 million General Assembly-funded expansion comes at a critical time for the community.

“We’ve been working towards this for a number of years, as everyone has seen the growth in Hampstead and Surf City, we have a need here, and we need to fill the need with more educational opportunities and workforce development,” he said.

The new building is expected to open in late fall of 2026.
