Cape Fear Community College hosts Back to School Safety Summit

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Students and teachers will be heading back to school soon and for most parents the safety of their little ones is the number one priority.

The NC Department to Public Instruction hosted its ‘annual RISE Back to School Safety Summit’ Monday at Cape Fear Community College’s Union Station Conference Center.

The Center for Safer Schools hosted the event.

Their goal is to provide training to school personnel to prevent, prepare and respond to school safety matters.

Karen Fairly is the executive director of the center for safer schools.  She says ultimately, they want to ensure kids can be kids and feel safe when they’re at school.

“We are doing what is best for the children, I just want children to be able to be children for one time, they have the rest of their lives to be adults, I just want them to enjoy their childhood,” Karen Fairly stated.

The conference is geared for school district staff, school resources officers and local law enforcement.

The conference continues through Wednesday.
