WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Cape Fear Community College is partnering with the non-profit Paws for People to create a new Assistance Dog Training program.

The program was created in response to a gap in workforce training when it comes to dog training that specializes in assistance and service dogs.

Beginning on October 8th, the program will teach students how to train service animals, care for service dogs, and teach the dogs how to navigate the world while assisting their handler.
There will be five different levels for students to go through, each teaching students to become trainers of assistance dogs and to teach the dogs how to navigate different disabilities from psychiatric to physical.
The first two courses in this program are open admission, while the third course and onward will be selective admission.
Once a student completes the program, they will earn a certification in Fundamentals of Assistance Dog Training from Paws For People.
