Cape Fear Creek Week kicks off for second year
SOUTHEASTERN, NC (WWAY)– Area environmental organizations are celebrating the region’s creeks, rivers, and streams all week long with a second annual event.
Cape Fear Creek Week kicked off on Monday.
Creek Week is a collaboration between the North Carolina Cooperative Extension, City of Wilmington’s Heal Our Waterways, Cape Fear River Watch, NC Coastal Landtrust, New Hanover County Soil and Water Conservation District, and NC Coastal Federation.
Amy Mead is the Area Natural Resources Agent for the North Carolina Cooperative Extension.
She says the goal of this week is to remind everyone to be considerate of protecting our waterways.
“Our creeks, our waterways, are really important for fishing, for recreation, for tourism, which are so much a part of what life is here, and we want to teach people why they’re so special, how they can protect those creeks, and how they can get involved to be able to keep them clean for future generations,” said Mead.
Throughout the week, there will be several events like watershed tours, educational tree presentations, tours of the new Clear Run Branch Project in Wilmington, and other activities.
Volunteer opportunities will also be available.
