Cape Fear Explorers uncover two fireplaces at Belvedere Plantation in Leland

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — A local non-profit organization in the Cape Fear made yet another discovery from the past.
The Cape Fear Explorers recently made a discovery of two fireplaces at the historic Belvedere Plantation in Leland. The explorers say this is one of several locations that George Washington visited in the late 1700’s. Two fireplaces were found within 33 feet of each other. Between the fireplaces, six vertical columns were found that were used for structural support. The explorers also said they unearthed hundreds of other artifacts buried beneath the house.
Several of the artifacts are now on display at the Fort Johnston – Southport Museum & Visitors Center.
