WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — The area’s newest baseball team will debut this summer, but with a completely new identity and home than previously expected.

The Cape Fear Ghost Crabs recently adopted their name from a fan vote following a copyright issue that prompted a change from Fish Sticks.

Also different is that the franchise will play its inaugural 2026 campaign at UNCW’s Brooks Field rather than the originally announced North Brunswick High School.

General Manager Tom Lamont says this is a massive move for the franchise.

“Brooks field provides a turf field, a beautiful new video scoreboard,” Lamont said. “The fan experience will be so much better at a college atmosphere. We want to support North Brunswick High School and the baseball program there because our intent was to play there. In the meantime, it’s just a great facility for us to be at to start out our first year.”

The Ghost Crabs will compete in The Old North State League and debut at Laurinburg on May 23. Their first home game will be on Memorial Day.

Like all summer league teams, the Ghost Crabs are looking for host families for their players. Contact the team for more information.
