Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity to honor former President Jimmy Carter
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Former President Jimmy Carter died this past Sunday and an organization he worked closely with for decades is planning to honor him in a unique way.
Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity will hold a memorial ceremony honoring the former president next Thursday.
During the ceremony, visitors can sign one of 3 doors, which will then be displayed at each of the organization’s 3 ReStores, located throughout the Cape Fear.
While Carter never visited Habitat for Humanity’s Cape Fear location, the organization wanted to honor the former President and First Lady’s contributions worldwide.
Christina Ferris is with Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity.
She said it’s a great way to honor Carter’s legacy.
“President Carter was a true humanitarian and the fact that Habitat has been an organization that has so benefited from his work is, we are incredibly grateful,” Ferris said. “For he and Mrs. Carter in all that they did through more than 40 years after his presidency.”
Volunteer Daniel Campbell visited Carter’s hometown of Plains, Georgia, several times and met the former president several times during his visits.
Campbell said it was special seeing Carter’s warmth and humbleness in person.
“Well the last time I saw him was 8 years ago and so he would have been 92 at the time,” Campbell said. “And he was just as sharp as anybody. He’s such an intelligent man and he just really sees through the nonsense and goes straight to the point of things. All the world would like to honor him in whatever the way they can. I know he would appreciate that.”
You can register to sign one of the doors, and if you cannot attend the ceremony, you can also sign an online memory book.
