Cape Fear Moms Demand Action hosts gun safety event
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — More than 50 people gathered Saturday at Long Leaf Park for a community event organized by Cape Fear Moms Demand Action for Gun Safety as part of National Gun Safety Weekend.
The group hosted the event at Shelter 3, where speakers addressed gun laws currently under consideration in the North Carolina legislature. Many attendees wore orange, a color several participants said hunters use to avoid being shot.
Participants walked a loop around Long Leaf Park, carried signs, and distributed informational materials on gun safety.
Volunteer Sage Grumbach explained why the event matters to her:
“We teach gun safety, we teach safe gun storage, and we also talk to our representatives about safe gun legislation.
I was holding a newborn when Columbine happened—watching it all unfold on TV. And my children grew up having to hide under desks. And now all these young moms here—they are tired of that happening. They want their kids to go to school and feel safe…”
Children also took part in the event. Organizers provided activities, games, and educational handouts for families.
