Career Readiness Academy at Mosley to close at completion of school year

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)– A public alternative high school is closing in New Hanover County.

The high school Career Readiness Academy at Moseley will not reopen after this school year.

Chief Academic Officer Patrice Faison released a statement, “Mosley has been an underutilized space in our district for quite some time, and it’s been an ongoing conversation for years about what to do about it. Despite our efforts to increase enrollment, there are currently only 63 high school students and 15 staff members.” end quote.

The district says it has a transition plan in place for the 53 underclassmen enrolled in the school.

Staff at the school will be allowed to transfer to other positions within the district.

“Mosley has been an underutilized space in our district for quite some time, and it’s been an ongoing conversation for years about what to do about it. Despite our efforts to increase enrollment, there are currently only 63 high school students and 15 staff members.

We recognize of course that this is going to be a significant change for the students and their families. However, because it’s such a small school we can be very individualized in how we help them transition. We will have a transition plan in place for all 52 underclassmen, whether they choose to attend one of our other specialty high schools or their districted school.

We also have 15 dedicated staff members at the high school, and we are going to ensure they each find a new position in our district.

During Agenda Review, we discussed the possibility of a Newcomers School at Mosley. Regardless, the plan to phase out the high school at that building was already in place.”
