Carolina Beach Police Department teaches kids bike safety

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The Carolina Beach Police Department hosted a Bike Rodeo Saturday for area families.

Their goal is to increase awareness of bicycle safety and establish positive relationships between the community and the police department.

Thanks to community donations, the police department was able to give 300 kids a helmet and make sure it fit properly.

Corporal Stewart Henderson is also the SRO at Carolina Beach Elementary and says kids ride their bike to school all the time and it’s important for them to be safe.

“The police department does what it can do to make it safe, but it’s good to see that people in the community want to make this area safer and keep our children safe too,” Henderson said.

Kids had to complete a bike safety course to enter a free bike drawing. There was also carnival games, free food, and giveaways.

Henderson says there was more than 20,000 dollars in donations which helped make this event possible and looks forward to it again next year.
