Carolina Beach to hold public meeting on $23.5M beach nourishment project

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Carolina Beach residents will have a chance to learn more about the town’s upcoming beach nourishment project during a public meeting Thursday evening.

The meeting is scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. in Town Council Chambers. Representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be available to answer questions and address concerns.

The work is part of the Carolina Beach and Vicinity Coastal Storm Risk Management project, a federal effort designed to reduce erosion and storm impacts along Carolina Beach and Kure Beach. The $23.5 million contract was awarded May 8, 2025, after earlier bidding attempts were delayed due to limited dredging availability in Fiscal Year 2025. The project award was finalized for Fiscal Year 2026.

The project is cost-shared between the federal government and the towns of Carolina Beach and Kure Beach. It is intended to protect coastal infrastructure, reduce hurricane damage and improve storm resilience. Officials say nourishment efforts also support habitat restoration and environmental protection, including dune ecosystems, sea turtle nesting grounds and shorebird habitat.

Norfolk Dredging has been hired to carry out the work. Beach nourishment operations will take place within the approved environmental window of Nov. 16 through April 30 and will include dredging and placing beach-quality sand along the shoreline.
