Carolina Beach to repair and bolster stormwater system after Potential Tropical Cyclone 8

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — After last week’s flooding in Carolina Beach from Potential Tropical Cyclone 8, the town is taking measures to mitigate future flooding events.

Last week, several homes, vehicles, and businesses were inundated by high water across Pleasure Island.

On Thursday, Carolina Beach Town Council approved $800,000 to fix a water pump and other stormwater infrastructure that was overloaded during the storm.

Town Manager Bruce Oakley said the funds are a stop-gap measure to keep Carolina beach’s stormwater system working well for the remainder of the current hurricane season.

“The debris removal, the overtime that emergency staffing had to put in, many other damages the town had. That’s the first go, we may find out that we need to use more money than that, but we hopefully get that reimbursed or partially reimbursed through the state or federal government,” Oakley said.

Governor Cooper and President Biden have declared a state of emergency for North Carolina, clearing the way for the town to potentially receive state and federal funding.
