Carolina Beach Town Council approves $800,000 storm relief budget

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY)– The flooding Carolina Beach saw from last week’s storm caused a water pump to overload and needs repairs. There will be a temporary fix to this water pump, but they want to upgrade the features of this pump for the future.
Numerous buildings and homes also flooded in the town.
The Town Council held a workshop this morning to hear a storm recovery update and to vote on a budget.
Council allocated $800,000 for disaster recovery which includes debris removal and town repairs.
Mayor Lynn Barbee says they needed to get the recovery process started today but are hoping to get reimbursed eventually by FEMA issuing a disaster declaration.
“Our goal is to get the town obviously cleaned up, running, and servicing the public again. That’s our responsibility. So, what we do is we extend the money to begin that process. Obviously, some of the stuff will be covered by the state or federal FEMA funds but we don’t wait on that,” Barbee said.
Barbee is happy to see the community come together and neighbors helping neighbors. With even people from out of town stopping in to help.
