Carolina Beach Town Council votes to rezone for waste site

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY)– Emotions ran high during a town meeting in Carolina Beach, where leaders voted to rezone a residential area for a waste disposal site.

The town was forced to find a new plot of land after Sunny Point Military Terminal told the town it has until June 1 to clean up the property the town is currently using. Residents of Carolina Beach came out to reason with Town Council to not rezone the land behind Federal Point Shopping Center.

After being sworn in, nine residents went in front of Town Council to give their reasons on why they should find other location for the disposal site. Residents said the area behind Federal Point Shopping Center is the gateway into the community and that putting the disposal site there would compromise the history of the land. They were also concerned having the disposal center in their back yard would devalue their property and disturb the peace with all the added noise from trucks going in and out of the facility.

A petition with 287 signatures was presented to the council. Councilman Tom Bridges told residents that the council had explored every other option possible and that this piece of land was the most ideal for the community. The town council voted 4-1 in favor of the rezoning.
