Catching up with Pharoah McKever
RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — At South Columbus High School Pharoah McKever played on both sides of the ball. He was a standout free safety on defense. He was also the Stallions quarterback. He’s yet to play QB at NC State, but it seems like he’s played every position and worn every number. “I started with #87, in the bowl game I changed to #88. Actually nobody knows, but at the beginning of the spring I had #89, but I changed back to #88 so I’ve had three numbers.”
On top of three numbers for Pharoah McKever it’s been three different positions for him at NC State. “I started as a wide receiver, then defensive end and now tight end.” In fact the first time Pharoah McKever ever touched the ball as a tight end he scored a touchdown. It was the Belk Bowl last December to give the Wolfpack the lead against Mississippi State. “It was like a homecoming, going back to offense and actually scoring in the Belk Bowl 82 yards.” That was not McKever’s first touchdown though. He also returned an interception for a touchdown against Syracuse in 2014. That was also an 82 yarder.
This season McKever has not seen a whole lot of playing time, but he is a staple on special teams. He plays on punt returns, punt blocks and field goals attempts.”It’s not been easy, but patience, I really have patience, just come in here and working hard everyday. Just put my head down. You never know when your number called.”
One day Pharoah McKever will be the answer to a trivia question in regard to New England Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett.
