CAUGHT ON CAMERA: Shark bites boat off Wrightsville Beach coast
WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — A man says a great white shark took a bite out of his motor right off our coast and he has the shark’s tooth to prove it.
Jannick Shroder said he and two friends went fishing on Saint Patrick’s day about 30 miles off the coast. It was a Saint Patrick’s Day fishing trip that brought them quite a bit of luck depending on how you look at it.
“In the beginning, we were trolling for some bigger fish like King Mackerel and stuff,” Schroeder said.
Schroeder said after a 30 minute battle, he realized he had a shark on his line, but that was not all he had.
“I was leaning over this side of the boat looking down and then, in the next second, a huge shade appeared from under the boat,” Schroeder said.
Schroeder said he is not an expert, but he is pretty sure a great white shark was chasing the shark he caught.
“Because I saw this black eye and he literally circled the shark I had on my rod, and not even 5 seconds later he snapped him literally in half,” Schroeder said.
As the panic was starting to set in, he said the boat took a hit.
“I heard something and I was like half falling, half leaning back and then, suddenly I was on the floor,” Schroeder said.
He said the shark bit their motor, but it was not until they got back on land later that day when they realized that.
“When we put it on the trailer, my other friend from Germany said, ‘Wait. Is this scratch regular here on the back?’ We’re like, ‘Let’s check it out.’ And then, we saw already that there was a tooth stuck in the engine,” Schroeder said.
That makes for a pretty lucky souvenir.
“That’s the best thing ever,” Schroeder said. “Fun fact about it. The old owner of the boat, his last name is Zahn which is tooth in German.”
It is proof that makes this one heck of a lucky fishing tale.
“I don’t think that’s like a daily experience,” Schroeder said.
Schroeder said they took the tooth to a the workshop in Wrightsville where you can buy shark teeth and they determined it was a great white shark tooth.
According to Ocearch, Cisco, the great white, pinged off Wrightsville Beach on March 16 at 4:00 a.m. and has been hanging around the area.
