CCMF working with Myrtle Beach Police to prepare for 2018 concert

Hours after the mass shooting at a country music concert in Las Vegas, organizers of the Carolina Country Music Fest were working with local law enforcement on a plan to keep people safe at the 2018 concert.

Jason Aldean, who was performing when the shots rang out in Las Vegas Sunday night, was a headliner at CCMF in 2017. Toby Keith and Luke Bryan have been announced as headliners for the 2018 concert.

Sometime before 10:30 a.m., about 12 hours after the Las Vegas shooting, Lt. Joey Crosby with Myrtle Beach police said he had already talked to Bob Durkin, an organizer.

In a statement released at around 1 p.m., Durkin said they “will continue to work closely with the Myrtle Beach Police department to prepare for 2018. We pledge our continued commitment to exhaust all resources to ensure CCMF provides a safe, secure environment for all.”

Crosby said police and event organizers will learn from what happened Sunday night.

“We plan and look at every angle when we look at events such as this to try to prevent something like what happened in Vegas from happening at our events. So it’s a very tragic situation but ultimately something that we will learn from,” he said.

He went on to say that planning for security at an event like CCMF takes a huge number of factors into account.

“You can’t just look at an active shooter situation because that’s not going to encompass one single event. Its part of what were seeing in Las Vegas, but then you look at Las Vegas and look at everything else. You have to look at fire being involved in this, medical being involved in this, how do you respond, what triage do you set up, how do you set up triage, how do you get those in need to medical attention, who is going to take those individuals, what hospitals do you take them to. So it’s not just the active shooter situation you have to look at, you have to look at the smallest thing from cuts, bandaids that are needed, basic first aid information, all the way up to the major things that could occur,” Crosby explained.

He said that security plans are continually evolving.
