Celebrating a legacy: remembering George Beatty’s impact on Brunswick County

NAVASSA, NC (WWAY) — A day of remembrance and celebration as a service was held for George Beatty, a man who touched many people and organizations.

More than 100 people gathered at the Navassa community center on Saturday afternoon for the service.

The service was a unique one as, after several proclamations honoring Beatty were read out, mourners then took to looking at tables set up by organizations Beatty had been involved in, such as the North Carolina Rice Festival and 100 Black Men of Coastal North Carolina.

Beatty’s daughter Brynette said it meant a lot to her father to help the people of Brunswick County in any way he could.

“Anything that was going to benefit young people and benefit the area as a whole, he was very interested in,” Beatty said. “He said that he said I can’t impact the whole world but I can try to leave my part of the world better than I found it.”

Another service honoring Beatty will be held in Texas next Saturday as he lived there for more than 30 years.

Beatty passed away back on December 28th after a battle with cancer.

He was 85 years old.
