Ceremony at Wilmington National Cemetery honors the fallen

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) –Many gathered Monday at Wilmington National Cemetery to honor U.S. service members who died in military service.

The New Hanover County Veterans Council hosted the annual ceremony, which included remarks from local leaders, musical tributes, and formal observances recognizing each branch of the military. As each service anthem played, attendees stood to pay tribute.

New Hanover County Commissioner Rob Zapple addressed the crowd and spoke about the gap between civilians and service members. He encouraged veterans to share their stories to help bridge that divide.

“Your words will not fall on deaf ears,” Zapple said. “More likely, you will see reactions of astonishment and great pride from families and acquaintances who never knew that part of you. In many cases, they will see you as an American hero walking among them.”

The Fleet Reserve Association concluded the event with the Two Bell Ritual, a naval tradition that honors fallen service members.
