WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Cape Fear Community College and the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina are partnering to offer a new culinary training course aimed at Spanish-speaking residents in the Wilmington area.

The course, Culinary Fundamentals in Spanish, will run from September 24 through December 4 at the Food Bank’s Wilmington location on Greenfield Street. Classes will be held Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a one-hour break each day.

Taught entirely in Spanish, the course is designed to provide participants with basic culinary skills and knowledge of commercial kitchen operations. Students who complete the program will earn a ServSafe Food Handler certification, a credential recognized across the food service industry.

The course costs $185, with participants also responsible for purchasing a knife kit, chef’s coat, and hat.

CFCC President Jim Morton said the class is intended to create more accessible training opportunities for the area’s Spanish-speaking population.

“This new course provides an opportunity for our Spanish-speaking community to enhance their culinary skills and gain a certification that can help open doors to employment in the food industry,” Morton said in a statement.

Emily Kraft, Director of Community Outreach for the Food Bank, said the program supports the organization’s mission by offering job training to underserved populations.

“With this course, we build on our mission to nourish people and build solutions for sustainable food security through industry-relevant job training,” Kraft said.

The course has limited space, and registration is now open online through Cape Fear Community College.
