CFCC put on Veterans Day ceremony to honor military veterans

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – Friday was a day of  appreciation for those who served our country.
This Veteran’s Day the rain didn’t stop Cape Fear Community College from holding a ceremony to honor our military veterans.
The ceremony kicked off with the Marine Corps H & S Battalion Color Guard, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance recited by kids in attendance. The event was open to the public, who had an opportunity to hear from speakers honoring those who’ve served.
Melina Chapula Gutierrez is an Air Force Veteran, she said she read a poem that came from here heart.
“I just really wanted to do right by all the Veterans that I know,” she said.
World War II Veteran Norris Rhinehart is 96 years- old, he keeps a smile on his face and said his gratitude keeps him young.
His son Phillip Rhinehart also served, he wanted to carry the tradition, and show the pride he has for his father.
“The constant chase of being an example like he has been to not only his family, but every person he comes in contact with,” he said.
Phillip got emotional when talking about why he joined the military, as his dad looked on.
“I joined to follow, be part of the history as well, I’m proud that I was able to do it,” he said.
Veterans Day in the United States has been observed since 1919 on the first anniversary of 1918 Armistice that ended World War I. The holiday was first known as Armistice Day. Army Veteran Andreah Anderson,  the holiday is also for Veterans to take time to think about their experience.
“I definitely had some detachment issues when I first got out,” she said. “I did feel separation from the military.”
Anderson works in the Bob Philpott Veterans Center.
“You got a lot of Veterans that don’t want to accept the resources at first that’s thing as well,” she said.  “You got to get the help.”
Anderson urges all Veterans to use resources available to them, and to remember that they are not alone, resources can be found here.
CFCC barber students showed their appreciation by offering free haircuts to veterans Thursday, and will do so again on Monday.
