CFCC raises awareness about human trafficking
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Cape Fear Community College’s Community Involvement and Service Learning Alliance hosted a panel discussion today entitled “Sex Trafficking in the Port City.”
The event was part of CFCC’s Human Trafficking Awareness Initiative, Not4$ale.
According to a video at the event, more than 300,000 children become victims of sexual exploitation every year in the United States.
“What we tried to do today is raise awareness,” MaLisa Umstead, Executive Director of A Safe Place, said. “That is really key in combating trafficking, not only in our area, but across our state and in our country. Raising awareness that trafficking is happening. It’s happening here. It’s happening in Wilmington, and happening every day.”
“Trafficking is a combination of sexual assault, domestic violence, and homelessness. So when these girls present themselves, they present with victim indicators of all three areas,” Umstead said.
If you think you have identified a victim of human trafficking, you can call A Safe Place at 1-855-723-7529. The hotline is available to answer calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
