CFCC to offer new NC-certified community health worker course

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Cape Fear Community College is preparing individuals to be certified community health workers by offering a North Carolina Community Health Worker course.

Classes begin on January 6th and meet on the downtown campus every Tuesday from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with an additional 3 hours of course week completed each week online.

The course costs $230 and includes 106 total hours of instruction, 96 hours of classroom learning and 10 hours of hands-on experience.

The course covers skills essential to the role including communication, capacity building, service coordination, interpersonal skills, advocacy, outreach, and professional conduct. It’ll address critical health and social issues as chronic disease, safety, emergency preparedness, social isolation, and adverse childhood experiences.

Students will also learn through the course how to connect clients to state and community resources.

Students must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or GED, provide a valid photo ID, and be a North Carolina resident.
