CFCC women’s soccer team drops opener in national tourney

MELBOURNE, FL (CFCC RELEASE) — Cape Fear Community College knew coming in that Butler Community College would be a tough assignment and it rang true, falling 3-0 in Pool B at the NJCAA Division I Women’s Soccer National Championship Tournament at Eastern Florida State College on the Melbourne campus. “We played a really good team,” Cape Fear women’s soccer coach Ryan Deppa said. “We knew that going in. Honestly, we did exactly what we wanted to. We missed an opportunity or two and they capitalized on the counter. “That second goal was a pretty great goal. We obviously don’t like to lose, but we lost to a good team and we respect them very much.” Colleen Howland scored five minutes into the game and the Grizzlies got second-half goals from Taylor Spencer and Lauren Allan.

Cape Fear, who is making its first-ever appearance in the NJCAA tournament, will return to action Tuesday when they face No. 7 Monroe at 12:30 p.m.
