Chadbourn interim police chief fired

CHADBOURN, NC (WWAY) — For the second time this month, Chadbourn is without a police chief.

Town Manager Patricia Garrell tells WWAY she decided this morning to terminate interim Police Chief Rene Trevino. He was notified of his termination this afternoon, Garrell said. She said she fired Trevino for violating the town’s social media policy.

The town suspended Trevino last week after town leaders learned of sexually explicit and offensive posts on Trevino’s Facebook post. Trevino described them as “humorous sexual posts.” The suspension and a discussion about it by town council led to a meeting earlier this week that led to some heated discussion by police officers and residents who attended. Council took no action at the closed session meeting.

Trevino could not immediately be reached for comment this afternoon. The town says Trevino, 44, started with the department on April 13, 2015. He was making $41,000 annually in his role as interim chief.

Trevino had been interim chief since Darrell Trivette announced in late January he would resign effective Feb. 5. Garrell said Lt. Brian Anderson would be in charge of the Chadbourn Police Department for the time being.

Last fall the town suspended and later fired Ofc. Ricky Soles over a post he made to his Facebook page that many people thought was a long rant about a minority group, which Soles denied. The town developed a policy governing social media after firing Soles.
