Charges dropped against veteran who saved dog from hot car

ATHENS, GA (WSBTV) — A veteran who broke a car window to free a small dog left in a hot vehicle at a shopping center earlier this month no longer faces criminal charges.

Desert Storm veteran Michael Hammons, 46, used the footrest of his wife’s wheelchair to get the Yorkie mix pup out of the car.

The dog’s owner, Elantra Cunningham, 22, said she was gone just five minutes but she  was cited by animal control for leaving her pet in the car. But she, in turn, pressed charges for criminal trespass against Hammons.

After the story of Hammon’s actions and the charges that followed was publicized, a Georgia Ford dealer offered to replace the smashed car window for free.

And Cunningham agreed to drop the charges
