Charter Day dress code lawsuit moves forward

GREENVILLE, NC (StarNews) — A federal judge has ruled that a lawsuit against Charter Day School claiming the school’s dress code discriminates against girls can move forward.

Senior U.S. District Judge Malcolm Howard denied a motion by Charter Day to dismiss the lawsuit, which was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of the parents of three girls.

Charter Day School, in Leland, requires that girls wear skirts, “skorts” or jumper dresses except specified days, such as for physical education classes or special circumstances allowing girls to wear pants, according to the school’s dress code.
