NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County is offering free Christmas tree recycling for residents starting Sunday through January 31.

“We’re proud to partner again with The Home Depot and the City of Wilmington to recycle Christmas trees for our residents,” Environmental Management Director Joe Suleyman said. “Real Christmas trees, wreaths, and garlands can be recycled into mulch and compost to be used in New Hanover County parks, gardens and grounds. We appreciate our community’s efforts to help reduce waste in our landfill and keep our environment clean.”

Trees, wreaths and garlands must have all lights, ornaments, stands and tinsel removed. Artificial trees or decorations will not be accepted. Residents are asked to stack the trees neatly as space is limited and demand is expected to be high. Fenced-in areas in the Home Depot parking lots will be marked with signage designating the drop-off locations.

The drop-off locations are:

  • Home Depot, 5511 Carolina Beach Road
  • Home Depot, 210 Eastwood Road
  • New Hanover County Landfill, 5210 US Highway 421 North

This program is funded and coordinated by the New Hanover County Environmental Management Department, with support from the City of Wilmington Sanitation Department and the Home Depot.

Additionally, Environmental Management has provided more holiday tips for residents to help keep recyclable items out of the landfill. In addition to trees and wreaths, items like gift wrap, paper or cardboard boxes, holiday cards, old gadgets and electronics can be recycled at the main recycling processing facility, drop-off sites or Mobile Hazwagon.

String lights, tinsel, foam packaging, bubble wrap, and ribbons or bows cannot be processed at recycling facilities and should be thrown in the trash. Residents in the Wilmington city limits can learn more about recycling services and accepted items here.
