City of Wilmington announces potential replacement project along downtown riverwalk

WILMINGTON, N.C (WWAY) — The City of Wilmington announced upcoming plans to replace a 59-year-old metal bulkhead in the Downtown Wilmington area.
Much of the shoreline relies on engineered bulkheads rather than natural riverbanks to prevent erosion and support activity along the water. In recent years, the city has proactively repaired or replaced large sections of this critical infrastructure, including areas between Market and Princess Streets and behind the Coastline Inn.
After decades of exposure to water, debris, and wave action, the structure has outlived its expected lifespan. Plans call for replacing it with a modern “relieving platform,” which will provide the same shoreline stabilization in a more environmentally friendly way.
The City of Wilmington will host an open house Wednesday, Mar. 25, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The open house will be held at the Skyline Center.
