WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Several events are happening around the Wilmington area leading up to Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday.

The MLK Community Center is holding a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at 401 South 8th Street.

The public is invited to attend the official start of construction on the MLK Center expansion and renovations at Robert Strange Park. This 5.57-million-dollar investment is a voter-approved parks bond project that will greatly increase the ability of this facility to serve the recreation needs of city residents.

On Saturday, an MLK Fun Day is being held at the Community Center, honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The public is invited to attend this free, family-friendly event and participate in games & activities, arts & crafts, bounce houses, and refreshments. It runs from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

The annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Monday in downtown Wilmington.

It will have some impact on traffic in downtown Wilmington.
