City of Wilmington holds second open house on Greater Downtown Plan

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The City of Wilmington has launched what it calls the Greater Downtown Plan and on Thursday, residents got an opportunity to learn more about it.

The purpose of the small area plan is to develop recommendations and strategies to address the needs and concerns in the study area.

Thursday’s open house was held with the Northside Food Co-op at the DREAMS Center for Arts Education.

It was the second meeting the city has held in recent months.

Travis Henley is the comprehensive planning manager and said open houses like the one held Thursday allow city staff to engage with residents individually.

“We’re here to listen. We’re here to hear what the community wants to see in the future of the greater downtown area and from that we’ll put together recommendations to make that happen,” Henley said. “The community really cares about the greater downtown area and we’re just excited that they’re excited.”

The data and information gathered will be used to address potential changes in land use policies, zoning regulations, local incentives, and programming to address top concerns shared by staff and the community.
