Cleanup efforts underway in Kure Beach as town council approves debris removal contract

KURE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — In New Hanover County, residents and business owners in Kure Beach have been cleaning up from Monday’s storm.

As of Thursday evening, many residents along Fort Fisher Blvd and many side streets in Kure Beach, have piles of debris and damaged items stacked in front of their homes.

During an emergency meeting held Thursday night, the town council approved a contract for debris removal and monitoring.

Kure Beach Mayor Allen Oliver said debris removal should begin sometime next week.

“We’re hoping for the first of the week,” Oliver said. “We really see, a lot of people will probably come to town this weekend to check on their second home or rental property. So we’re gonna see a ton of debris put out on the street. And this, this contract will run until, they’ll make several swipes through town and then, so this will go on for several weeks.”

Donald Ure owns a home in Kure Beach and has already begun removing damaged drywall as his home has nearly a foot of water on the first floor.

He said it’s tough to see so much damage, but he’s glad he’s able to rebuild.

“There is a lot of debris, a lot of debris,” Ure said. “I will say we’re fortunate. We’ve got time to rebuild and it hasn’t, hasn’t totally destroyed our home so we’re fortunate that way.”

Oliver also told WWAY that Monday’s storm was unprecedented as many residents had never experienced flooding in their homes before.
